OUTDOOR LEARNING AT ST. GILES'

At St Giles we understand the importance of using places other than the classroom for teaching and learning. Learning outside the classroom is planned for and integrated into all curriculum areas. The school benefits from a large field, wooded area, bug hotel, outdoor playhouse and large covered wooden gazebo.  We are also hoping to create a sensory garden in the near future.  So watch this space!

At St Giles we recognise the following benefits of children learning in the school grounds, field, playground and local area. Outdoor learning :

  • Engages reluctant learners
  • Improves attainment
  • Improves mental health
  • Improves physical health
  • Gives learning context
  • Builds relationships
  • Improves communication skills
  • Increases confidence
  • Connects pupil with nature – especially children from urban areas
  • Improves social skills
